Mariners DFA Cade Marlowe
The Seattle Mariners made a significant roster move this week, designating outfielder Cade Marlowe for assignment to clear space on their 40-man roster for newly acquired infielder Jorge Polanco.
Seattle finalized a deal with Polanco, to bring back the versatile switch-hitting infielder with a proven track record. The 31-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit .213 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs across 118 games. While those numbers might not jump off the page, Polanco has demonstrated solid power and defensive versatility throughout his career, attributes the Mariners hope Jorge still has in the tank in order to execute a bounce back season. He is expected to perform primarily third base duties, adding stability to the infield..
Marlowe the Odd Man Out
Marlowe, 27, saw limited action at the Major League level last season, appearing in just eight games for Seattle. Most of his year was spent with Triple-A Tacoma, where he showcased his speed and athleticism, batting .236 with eight doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, and 45 stolen bases over 90 games. In his brief Major League stint, he hit .240 with three home runs and 11 RBIs across 42 career games.
Despite his potential as a high-energy, depth outfielder, the Mariners made the difficult decision to remove him from their roster. Given his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively, Marlowe could draw interest from other teams seeking outfield reinforcements. The move also suggests confidence in their current outfield options both in the majors and in their farm.
